Teachable & Learnable Attitudes Keys to Music Excellence – (Part 1)

Almost every student that I have met, wants to learn fast, and quickly pass their exams (and yes as I grimace, to stop having lessons at the soonest possibility). However, some of them have developed a strong mindset and attitude, whereby they will reject all the essential information and insights that would assist them to achieve their desired goals. They want to retain their old habits, refrain from learning new information and do not practice regularly to develop technical skills. Some of them would even manifest tantrums, or create the impression that the lessons are boring and dull.

Striving to be a good teacher, is a continuous goal in stretching myself. I do not teach as one would for the purpose of earning an income, but as one who believes in mentoring my students and shaping their mindsets towards developing positive teachable and learnable attitudes. Both these attitudes will spur an inner hunger for learning, and while being engrossed in processing the knowledge and skill, they will display quick learning habits and producing good work.

What are involved in encouraging teachable moments? Firstly, students must cultivate the learning process of learning information first, and to implement in their practical or theory assignments. Then they need to analyze and evaluate their mistakes, and to rectify and improve. There are constant repetitions of learning and relearning until one achieves satisfaction that an acceptable result is produced.

Run Hao’s Story
Run Hao is a fruitful example of having a teachable and learnable attitude. He started his theory lessons with me in December 2017, and he had to begin learning many foundational theory information. He also had to redo many of the exercises in both the Grade 6 and 7 theory books.

To my amazement, he completed his Grade 8 theory workbook at the end of January 2018 – in 2 months! (My previous record was several students completing their Grade 8 theory within 3 months!).

Being very analytical and detailed, I piece together plans and systems to impart knowledge and technical skills in concise, precise and summarized step by step plans. Any student who follows the guidelines in these plans will all demonstrate the same results of quick comprehension and excellence.

There are systematic and detailed guidelines in achieving the same results!
